"Kimchi Becomes Export Hero"…Achieves $81 Million in Exports This June
4.8% Increase Compared to Last Year, 20.3% Increase Compared to Average
Kimchi Export Target of $300 Million by 2027
Kimchi is becoming a key export driver. Exports increased by nearly 5% compared to the previous year, resulting in a trade surplus of 1.7 million dollars in the first half of this year.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 6th that as of June this year, kimchi export value reached 81 million dollars, up 4.8% from last year (77 million dollars as of June) and 20.3% from the average year (67 million dollars).
Thanks to increased demand in the US and European markets, a trade surplus of 1.7 million dollars was recorded in the first half of this year. Export volume also rose by 3.0% (22,000 → 23,000 tons) compared to last year and 20.0% compared to the average year.
The Ministry is currently focusing all efforts on the '3rd Comprehensive Plan for Kimchi Industry Promotion (2023?2027)', setting a target of 300 million dollars in kimchi exports by 2027, and securing Korea kimchi’s overwhelming quality competitiveness through four major strategies and nine key tasks.

Key tasks include developing superior starter cultures and expanding their distribution, diversifying locally customized products such as functional labeled products, vegan, and low-sodium kimchi, and developing long-term distribution technologies to delay the ripening of export kimchi. Additionally, the Ministry plans to actively support the revitalization of kimchi exports through continuous operation of the 'Kimchi Industry Stakeholder Council' to respond to kimchi-related issues and expand the designation of overseas Kimchi Days (from 8 regions in 2022 to 15 regions in 2027).
