Appointment of Kim Sung-wook as Director General of International Economic Affairs
The Ministry of Economy and Finance has appointed Kim Seong-wook, Director General of International Economic Management, as its first spokesperson at the director-general level.
On the 4th, the Ministry of Economy and Finance made this level 1 personnel appointment. The newly appointed spokesperson Kim is regarded as a seasoned international economic official who has held key positions related to international finance, including head of the Foreign Exchange Fund Division, head of the International Finance Division, director general of the International Finance Bureau, and director general of International Economic Management (vice ministerial level).
He graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in economics and entered public service in 1993 by passing the 37th Administrative Examination. He began his career at the Ministry of Finance and Economy and served in the Economic Policy Bureau, Financial Policy Bureau, and later as head of the International Organizations Division and Foreign Exchange Fund Division at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
As director general of the International Finance Bureau, he led foreign exchange supply and demand measures to reduce volatility in the foreign exchange market caused by COVID-19 and the tightening by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed). He also spearheaded a comprehensive reform of Korea’s foreign exchange system, including the enactment of the new Foreign Exchange Act. Since last year, as director general of International Economic Management, he has responded to issues such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and played a key role in resuming finance ministers’ meetings with Japan and concluding a currency swap agreement.

The government has upgraded spokesperson positions from director level to director-general level in seven ministries, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Ministry of Education. The aim is to strengthen publicity on policy issues. The Ministry of Economy and Finance concluded its level 1 personnel appointments with the announcement of the spokesperson.
