Dongdaemun-gu Wins 'Excellence Award' in National Local Government Job Competition
226 Metropolitan and Basic Local Governments Nationwide Applied, Awarded in Public Announcement Category
Secured 70 Million KRW Incentive Project Fund... Demonstrating Growth Potential in Job Sector of the 8th Elected Administration
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 2nd that it won the "Excellence Award" in the "2023 National Local Government Job Awards" hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
The Job Awards have been held annually since 2012 by the Ministry of Employment and Labor to promote local governments' efforts in job creation and to raise awareness of local jobs, following the introduction of the Local Job Target Public Announcement System in 2010 to enhance regional responsibility and autonomy in job creation. However, Dongdaemun-gu had no prior award history.
This year, 226 metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide applied. After the first evaluation by city/province in April and the second central evaluation in May, the final results were announced on August 2nd.
Based on the 2022 performance, Dongdaemun-gu received high praise for excellent projects, including ▲ exceeding the target by creating 8,933 direct and indirect public jobs ▲ actively promoting the Campus Town project utilizing human and material resources of local universities ▲ establishing Dongdaemun-gu-style startup spaces such as the DDM Startup Support Center and Youth Employment Academy using donated spaces ▲ supporting youth policy governance activities such as youth policy networks and platform projects, all driven by the local government leader’s strong interest and commitment to the job sector.
With this award, the district secured 70 million KRW in incentive project funds, which will be invested in projects for job creation next year.

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung stated, “I am very honored to receive this award despite the regional conditions lacking an industrial base,” and added, “We will continue to discover various projects utilizing the human and material resources of local universities and do our best to make Dongdaemun-gu a city where anyone wants to live with abundant quality jobs.”
