Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, “Plans to provide additional budget support for libraries... We will strive to develop diverse and beneficial programs”
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) is operating 143 reading culture programs including lectures, experiences, exhibitions, and performances at each library so that residents can enjoy a ‘Book Road’ journey in cool libraries during this summer of continuous heatwaves.
At Mapo Central Library, participant-tailored programs will be held from the end of August through September.
Programs for parents and young children include ▲‘Picture Book Parenting Guide Education’ (August 25) ▲‘Picture Book Play with Mom and Dad’ (starting September 2), and for adults, a lecture titled ▲‘Adult Literacy’ by broadcast writer Kim Sun-young (September 13) will be conducted.
There will also be performances for children. On September 16, a performance titled ‘Our Book Adventure’ by the theater troupe ‘Geoljagpum’ will engage the audience and creatively present the somewhat stiff theme of encouraging reading in an entertaining way.
At Sogeumnaru Library, under the theme ‘Library Dinosaur Adventure,’ an original illustration exhibition of the picture book 'Dinosaur Bathhouse' will be held from September 1, followed by a meeting with author Woo Seong-hee on September 9, and on September 16, participants will have the opportunity to create a giant dinosaur artwork.
Additionally, architect Lee Jong-wook, author of 'The City Seen by Walking, Seoul,' will be invited to share his impressions of walking around Seoul, and a program to explore the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail with a local guide will be offered.
At Purume Children’s Library, the ‘Summer Vacation Soksok Camp - TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL PLAY’ will run until the 4th. This meaningful program, offered as a talent donation by the university student and medical staff club ‘Do Dam,’ helps children overcome their fear of hospitals and experience medical professions through hospital play.
Seogang Library focuses on deep reading and exhibitions. Starting at the end of August, the program ‘Reading Human_Homo Bookers’ will savor Milan Kundera’s representative work The Unbearable Lightness of Being with book critic Lee Hyun-woo and reinterpret Nietzsche’s philosophy.
Especially, Seogang Library’s children’s reading room will be transformed into an exhibition space titled ‘welcome to KITTY WORLD_The World of Fantasy and Adventure’ until September, uniquely decorated with works, books, and props by Kitty Crowder, winner of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
Other programs include ▲Prehistoric Book Making at Neulpureun Sonamu Small Library, ▲‘Seogang University AIESEC Reading & Cultural Experience’ (August) at Mapo Children’s English Library, and ▲‘Children and Picture Books’ (August 18) at Dream-ful Small Library. Detailed information on each program can be found on the respective library websites.
