Gwangjin-gu announced that it will provide 13 types of safety supplies to prevent fall accidents for vulnerable elderly.
Elderly with weak muscle strength can easily suffer fractures even from minor impacts. In particular, low-income households with poor living environments have relatively higher fall accident rates, and neglecting treatment often leads to death.
Accordingly, the district supports fall prevention supplies to ensure the safe daily life of the elderly. They conduct home visits to assess fall risk, reflect on areas needing improvement and the elderly’s requests, and provide customized support.
The supplies include a total of 13 items such as safety handrails (photo) that can be installed on walls, beds, and toilets, anti-slip mats, and threshold levelers. These are designed considering that most fall accidents occur in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
Additionally, items such as indoor lighting remote controls to assist elderly with mobility difficulties, gas safety timers, rechargeable canes, and portable urinals are included. Necessary supplies can be supported within a maximum of 300,000 KRW per household.
After installation, detailed instructions on how to use the items will be provided, along with thorough safety education including fall accident prevention guidelines.
The target group is elderly aged 65 and over residing in the district who are basic livelihood security recipients or belong to the lower-income bracket. Applications will be accepted for 300 people by the end of this year, and those interested can apply by visiting their local community service center.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “Since most elderly fall accidents occur at home, it is important to create a safe living environment,” and added, “We will do our best to support a healthy and comfortable old age.”
Mayor Kim has continued his community service efforts, including personally cleaning elderly residents’ bathrooms earlier this year.
