Now in its 4th year, the Smart Construction Challenge is an event hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, where related public institutions share roles to oversee competitions in five technical fields: safety management, complex & housing, roads, railroads, and Building Information Modeling (BIM). In each field, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award (1 team, prize money of 30 million KRW) and Public Institution Head Awards (3 teams, prize money of 10 million KRW) will be presented.

This year’s competition themes are ▲Safety Management: smart technologies applicable to construction site and facility maintenance ▲Complex & Housing: smart technologies in the complex and housing sector including construction machinery, artificial intelligence (AI), BIM, drones, and control systems ▲Roads: demonstration and evaluation of drone technologies applicable to road design, construction, and maintenance ▲Railroads: smart technologies in the railroad sector such as AI, Internet of Things (IoT), construction equipment automation (MG/MC), and integrated control ▲BIM: evaluation of BIM-based automation capabilities including alternative generation, quantity estimation, and regulatory review.

Outstanding technologies awarded the Minister’s Award will receive support such as priority application in field verification, market development opportunities with public institutions, and additional points when selected as a promising small and medium enterprise next year. Companies wishing to participate can fill out the application form on the Smart Construction Challenge website and submit it via the representative email by the 25th of this month.

Kim Gyu-cheol, Director of Technology Safety Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "For new convergence and fusion technologies to be applied in our society, various challenges are necessary, and since this challenge is promoted to support such challenges, we hope many companies will participate."
