Confirmed Infection of 'Cat AI' in Gwanak-gu, Seoul
A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) infection in a cat has been confirmed once again.
On the 31st, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that a cat at an animal shelter located in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, was confirmed to be infected with highly pathogenic (H5N1) AI.
The cat was brought to a nearby animal hospital with symptoms such as loss of appetite and respiratory issues, and died during treatment. The animal hospital director reported the case to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency. On the 29th, the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment tested the cat and confirmed infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5 subtype).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is sharing the situation with related agencies including the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the Ministry of Environment, and local governments. Through local governments, the animal shelter is being disinfected and an epidemiological investigation is underway. Surveillance and testing are also being conducted on animal breeding facilities within a 10 km radius.
