What Kind of City Is Good for Women to Live In?
Gangbuk-gu to Promote Research Project for Creating a ‘Women-Friendly City’
Setting Direction for Project Implementation Based on Regional Characteristics... Discovering 5 Major Goals, Detailed Projects, and Specialized Projects
Seoul’s Gangbuk-gu (District Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is undertaking a research project to create a ‘women-friendly city’ where women and men participate equally in local policy and development processes, and where women’s empowerment, care, and safety are realized.
As of January 2023, 101 local governments have been designated as women-friendly cities, including 13 autonomous districts within Seoul.
Through this research project, the district plans to establish a project implementation direction tailored to Gangbuk-gu’s characteristics that reflects the five major goals of a women-friendly city: ▲building a foundation for gender equality policy implementation ▲expanding women’s economic and social participation ▲enhancing community safety ▲creating a family-friendly (care) environment ▲strengthening women’s capacity for community activities. To achieve these five goals, detailed projects and specialized projects will be identified for each area, including the background, implementation plans, and main project contents.
Additionally, the district will reanalyze and explore utilization and supplementation measures for ongoing gender equality projects such as ▲support for retired teachers’ after-school classes ▲establishment and operation of the Career Plus Center ▲support for low-income single-parent families ▲household service support for pregnant women in dual-income multi-child families ▲operation of the Single-Person Household Support Center.
Furthermore, considering gender, region, age, and class, a survey will be conducted with 1,000 residents to identify policy demands, and opinions from related experts including women’s organizations, public officials, and local institutions will also be collected.
Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, “We plan to derive the direction and detailed tasks for creating a women-friendly city by reflecting the policy demands of residents,” adding, “Gangbuk-gu will take the lead in creating a women-friendly city and ultimately contribute to realizing gender equality at the societal level.”
