Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 30th that it will complete the construction of the “Blind Spot Resolution Integrated System” by the end of October to create a safer route for children going to and from school and take the lead in preventing traffic accidents in school zones.
The district recently focused on the increased risk of traffic accidents within school zones caused by blind spots around school entrances.
Accordingly, the district devised the “Blind Spot Resolution Integrated System,” which incorporates the latest information and communication technology (ICT) to provide real-time alerts about blind spot situations, and plans to install it in the school zones around three elementary schools under its jurisdiction: Seokchon Elementary, Songpa Elementary, and Yeongpung Elementary.
The “Blind Spot Resolution Integrated System” displays real-time situations using video cameras and LED panels. AI cameras detect vehicles and children entering blind spots separately, broadcasting real-time warnings to drivers via LED electronic boards and to children through voice guidance. This method is expected to increase drivers’ duty of care, minimize blind spots within school zones, and contribute to preventing traffic accidents involving children.
The district plans to expand the facilities next year, starting with the installation of the “Blind Spot Resolution Integrated System.” It will focus on identifying areas prone to traffic accidents caused by blind spots such as landscaping, trees, and various facilities in front of schools to establish a safer traffic environment for children.
Additionally, a ‘Songpa-style Advanced Yellow Carpet’ will be newly installed in front of the main gate of Geowon Elementary School. This facility, developed by integrating ICT into the existing yellow carpet, features LED monitors, warning lights, and voice guidance installed on the yellow carpet’s sidewalls to inform about approaching vehicles. Last year, the district received great public response by installing the nation’s first ‘Songpa-style Advanced Yellow Carpet’ at Jamjeon Elementary School.
To prevent children’s traffic accidents, the district installed ‘Yellow Footprints’ at 57 locations across seven schools including Gaju Elementary School in the first half of this year. In the second half, 47 more will be installed in school zones around 10 schools including Gaerong Elementary. Furthermore, the district plans to complete the installation of a ‘Real-time Right Turn Pedestrian Alert’ in front of the Garakbon-dong Daycare Center by the end of this year.
