Hanwha Aero Partners with KAIST to Develop Autonomous Driving Technology
Hanwha Aerospace is partnering with KAIST to develop technology that enables autonomous driving in fields and grasslands.
Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 28th that on the 26th, it held a plaque ceremony for the autonomous driving technology research center, 'Autonomy Hub,' at KAIST in Daejeon, attended by Son Jae-il, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, and Lee Kwang-hyung, President of KAIST, among others.
The Autonomy Hub aims to develop autonomous driving technology for military unmanned vehicles to secure optimal routes and reach target points in rough environments without prior information. The detailed tasks include recognizing the surrounding environment in rugged terrain, setting routes reflecting terrain information, and developing location estimation functions that respond to jamming that interferes with radio waves. These tasks will be carried out until the first half of 2026, along with nurturing research personnel.
Hanwha Aerospace is securing military autonomous driving data by developing 'Arionsmet,' a multipurpose unmanned vehicle applying manned-unmanned combined operation technology.
KAIST also possesses world-class research capabilities in related technology fields such as robotics and computer vision. Professor Myung Hyun from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, participating in the Autonomy Hub, won first place at the '2023 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)' in the 'Quadruped Robot Autonomous Walking Competition,' beating institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
