Prosecutors Conduct Search and Seizure at Former Yeosu Chamber of Commerce President Over Support for Song Young-gil's External Organization
The prosecution investigating the Democratic Party of Korea's 'party convention cash envelope scandal' has detected signs of illegal fundraising by 'Peace and Livelihood Research Institute' (Meoksayeon), an external organization of former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil, and has launched a forced investigation.
On the morning of the 27th, the Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-chul) is conducting raids on about 10 locations, including the residence and office of Park, former head of the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce, offices of companies and organizations supporting Meoksayeon, and residences of related individuals.
In addition to allegations that ahead of the May 2021 party convention, independent lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok and other primary campaign officials distributed a total of 94 million won within the party to secure former leader Song's election, the prosecution is investigating signs that even more funds were used illegally.
