On the 26th, Daegu City selected Nam Seong-hee, president of Daegu Health College (67), who has contributed to improving the status of women and spreading a culture of gender equality, as the recipient of the 20th Daegu City Women’s Award for her contributions to community development in various fields such as education, volunteering, culture, and sports.
Daegu City annually awards the ‘Daegu City Women’s Award’ to one woman who serves as a role model in improving women’s status and rights, promoting gender equality, and contributing to community development.
From 2004 to 2016, the award was given under the name ‘Mokryeon Award’ divided into three categories: women’s development, social service, and equal family. However, since 2017, the award has been unified into a single category, Women’s Award, to enhance its prestige.
Nam Seong-hee, selected as the recipient of the 20th Daegu Metropolitan City Women’s Award this year, has served as president of Daegu Health College since 2002 and is a representative woman who broke the glass ceiling in the local community with numerous accolades.
She became the youngest president of the Women’s Association Council in 2009 and, in 2005, became the first woman district governor in the 70-year history of Korean Rotary, serving as governor of Rotary International District 3700. Since 2020, she has been the first female president of the Korea Council for College Education.
Additionally, as the 14th president of the Daegu Women’s Association Council, she restored exchanges with the Hiroshima Women’s Association Council, secured funds to revitalize women’s organizations, conducted women’s empowerment education, and carried out various public interest campaigns. She also supported joint weddings for multicultural families, earning high praise from the local women’s community through creative projects.
Furthermore, while serving consecutive terms as president of the Daegu branch of the Korean Red Cross (29th and 30th terms), she implemented the ‘Hope Sharing Nameplate Campaign,’ increasing regular sponsorship fees from 340 million KRW at the time of her inauguration to 1.3 billion KRW, and expanded social contribution agreements with companies, institutions, and organizations.
During her tenure as governor of Rotary International District 3700, she organized various international volunteer activities such as fundraising for disabled support, events to comfort foreign workers, and the Love Blood Donation Concert, and donated an ambulance to a municipal hospital in Mongolia.
Meanwhile, Daegu Health College, where President Nam is currently serving, has been selected as an excellent company for gender-equal employment by promoting a culture of gender equality including non-discriminatory personnel management. It has developed into the leading health-specialized university nationwide in culture and volunteer fields, and she is recognized as a leader who has transcended the limits of women in her institution.
In addition, she has contributed to regional development in various fields as chairperson of the Daegu International Opera Festival Organizing Committee, chairperson of the National Debt Repayment Movement Memorial Project Fundraising Committee, and chairperson of the Daegu Art Square Organizing Committee.
