Lee Jae-myung "Ruling and opposition parties must unite to amend flood-related laws"
On the 25th, Lee Visits Flood Damage Site in Buyeo, Chungbuk
"More Support Needed Through Legal Revisions"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 25th regarding flood damage countermeasure bills, "I hope the ruling and opposition parties can work together to swiftly amend the laws."
On the same day, during his visit to the flood damage site in Buyeo, Chungbuk, Lee said, "Through legal revisions, the community should move toward a society that shares more support and responsibility for disaster damage." Earlier, Lee visited flood damage sites in Gwangju-Jeonnam, Cheongju and Goesan in Chungbuk, Iksan in Jeonbuk, and Yecheon in Gyeongbuk to console flood victims and participate in recovery efforts.
Lee emphasized, "Many disasters can be avoided depending on the attitude of public officials and where they focus their attention," adding, "We need to reflect on these shortcomings and promptly create institutional measures where there are deficiencies."
He also positively evaluated the government's swift declaration of 'special disaster zones' for areas affected by heavy rain. Lee said, "The most frequently heard request at the flood damage sites was to quickly declare disaster zones," and added, "Fortunately, the government promptly declared the disaster zones this time, which is commendable." He continued, "While volunteer work is important to help even a little, more importantly, there must be massive government support through a swift supplementary budget," repeatedly urging for the supplementary budget.
Additionally, he highlighted the need for further institutional compensation and support. Lee stated, "Many flood victims have consistently appealed that institutional compensation and support are very insufficient," emphasizing that the ruling and opposition parties should unite to discuss flood recovery support measures.
The ruling and opposition parties are expected to discuss related legislation at the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow (the 26th).

The Environment and Labor Committee, which has a backlog of related bills including the Urban Stream Basin Flood Damage Prevention Act (Urban Flood Act) and amendments to the River Act, originally scheduled a full meeting for the 28th. However, the schedule was moved up after Park Jeong, the committee chairman from the Democratic Party, along with fellow party members Park Byeong-seok, Choi Gi-sang, and Yoon Jun-byeong, went on a business trip to Vietnam, which caused controversy.
