On the 24th, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded at a regular briefing to a question from Yonhap News regarding Taiwan authorities' explanation that suspicious packages were sent from China to South Korea. He said, "China has already received a request for investigation from the Korean side" and that an investigation is underway.
Starting on the 20th, when three people who opened a package suspected to contain a gaseous poison at a welfare facility for the disabled in Ulsan complained of dizziness, reports of unidentified overseas mail deliveries have continued nationwide over the past few days.
According to the National Police Agency, as of 5 a.m. the previous day, there have been a total of 1,904 emergency calls reporting suspicious packages sent from places including Taiwan. The police have collected and are investigating 587 of these cases, while the remaining 1,317 have been confirmed as false reports.
Cheng Wen-tsan (Jeong Wonchan), Vice Premier of Taiwan's Executive Yuan, recently explained, "The packages were sent from Shenzhen, China, to Taiwan as 'transit mail,' and then forwarded to South Korea via Chunghwa Post (Taiwan Post)."
Earlier, on the 23rd, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a text message distributed to the press corps, "Through our diplomatic missions in China, we have contacted the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant authorities, and the local government to request a prompt verification of facts and explanation."
