Preparation Begins for Joint Reenactment Event of King Jeongjo's Royal Procession
Geumcheon-gu Launches Resident-Led ‘Joint Reenactment Event of King Jeongjo’s Royal Procession’
‘Festival Governance’ Formed with Residents and Experts Directly Planning and Participating
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) held the first meeting on the 19th to prepare for the joint reenactment event of King Jeongjo’s royal procession scheduled for October by forming a ‘festival governance’ committee.
The ‘festival governance’ (Chairman Song Seon-won, former professor at Chung-Ang University) is an ad hoc advisory body composed of 14 cultural and arts experts from Geumcheon-gu, including residents (Siheung 5-dong Resident Autonomy Committee members), Geumcheon Cultural Center, Geumcheon Cultural Foundation, teachers from the Traditional Arts High School, and the Youth Gugak (Korean traditional music) group.
At the meeting, they set directions to enhance the symbolism unique to Geumcheon-gu and discussed ways to expand performances involving residents. Subsequently, three more meetings will be held by the end of October to finalize the event program, performance composition, progress checks, evaluations, and improvements.
Now in its sixth year, the joint reenactment event of King Jeongjo’s royal procession sequentially recreates the journey King Jeongjo took with his mother (Lady Hyegyeong Hong) from Changdeokgung Palace through Siheung Haenggung in Geumcheon-gu to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress to pay respects at the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado.
The ‘Siheung Haenggung’ section covers approximately 1.8 km from the Geumcheon-gu Office entrance intersection to the site of Siheung Haenggung. About 200 participants and 20 horses will be mobilized to reenact the ‘street parade,’ ‘King Jeongjo’s proclamation of a royal edict,’ and ‘mock fencing scenes,’ along with traditional performances and experience booths, offering a diverse and rich event.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Geumcheon-gu is the only place where King Jeongjo stayed overnight during his royal procession, at Siheung Haenggung, and it is a historic city where he communicated directly with the people through fencing contests. We will do our best to highlight the reenactment event under the theme of communication and resident participation.”
