On the 21st, the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee concluded the confirmation hearing for Kim Young-ho, the nominee for Minister of Unification, without adopting a progress report after a debate close to a 'thought screening.' The committee meeting for the hearing automatically adjourned past midnight.
The floor leaders of the ruling and opposition parties plan to coordinate meeting schedules over the weekend to discuss whether to adopt the progress report on Kim's confirmation hearing. According to the Confirmation Hearing Act, the National Assembly must hold a hearing and send a progress report to the government within 20 days from the date the request for confirmation is submitted. For Kim, the deadline is June 24. If the report is not submitted within the deadline, the President may request resubmission from the National Assembly within 10 days, and if the report is still not delivered within this period, the appointment can proceed.

The opposition party launched an offensive during the 14-hour hearing, claiming "the nominee's document submissions are insufficient." Kim refused to submit most documents related to his spouse and direct descendants, citing "personal privacy." In particular, he rejected virtually all requests for information about his son, including academic background, university admission process, scholarship details, and military service. On the other hand, the ruling party defended Kim by emphasizing that he submitted all documents legally required and that previous government cabinet nominees also did not provide all requested materials.
Kim's stance on North Korea and his related YouTube channel were also hot topics. The opposition criticized him for holding views on North Korea unsuitable for the Minister of Unification position, while the People Power Party countered that it was inappropriate to question statements he made during his academic career.
Kim continued to express his convictions in response to the opposition's attacks. In particular, regarding the Democratic Party's demands for documents related to his family, real estate, and restoration of his YouTube channel?which are not legally required?he flatly refused, saying, "I have no intention of doing so." In response to Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Sang-hee's remark that "looking at his activities over the past five years running the YouTube channel, he is closer to a far-right YouTuber than a scholar," Kim replied, "I do not agree with being called a far-right YouTuber," adding, "I have even published books based on what I said on YouTube, so what would I have to hide?"

Referring to North Korea's recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), he said, "North Korea repaid goodwill for peace on the Korean Peninsula and the future of our compatriots with reckless provocations and threats." He continued, "As North Korea has nullified numerous inter-Korean agreements, the lives of North Korean residents have become impoverished, and a harsh situation of human rights violations continues," emphasizing, "This is the reality we face on the Korean Peninsula."

However, he stated that the "door to dialogue" is always open and said, "I will pursue approaches that can yield substantive results rather than dialogue for the sake of dialogue." He said he would start by accurately understanding and publicizing the reality of North Korea through broad investigations and analyses, expressing the view that the Ministry of Unification's role in 'North Korea intelligence' should be strengthened. Regarding the 'North Korean human rights' issue, which the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is emphasizing, he stressed, "It is a practical preparation for unification that spreads and realizes the values of liberal democracy in North Korea."
