Putin: "Poland Aims to Join War... Will Respond with All Means if Belarus Invaded"
Wagner Group Moves to Belarus
Poland Criticized Amid Rising Tensions
President Vladimir Putin said on the 21st (local time) that "any attack on Belarus will be met with a response using all available means."
According to Sputnik News and others, President Putin warned at the regular National Security Council meeting that day, "Belarus is a member of Russia and the Union State. Any attack on Belarus will be considered an attack on Russia."
He added, "There have been reports that Poland is forming a joint force with Lithuania and Ukraine. This is not simply about gathering mercenaries," and claimed, "They say the goal is to guarantee security in western Ukraine, but in fact, it is for the subsequent occupation of that territory." He also stated, "If Polish forces enter Ukraine, they will remain there permanently."
Furthermore, he asserted, "Polish leaders will probably form some alliance within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and directly intervene in the Ukraine war to reclaim western Ukrainian territory, which they believe to be their historic land." He continued, "However, they forget that their western territory was a gift from Stalin, the former Soviet leader, during World War II."
Sergey Naryshkin, head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), also reported that "the Polish leadership is intensifying its intention to deploy troops to control western Ukrainian territory." He added that he believes Poland realizes that Ukraine's defeat in this war is only a matter of time.
In response, President Putin instructed Director Naryshkin to closely monitor Poland's plans regarding Ukraine.
This statement came amid the Wagner Group, a mercenary company that recently attempted an armed rebellion in Russia, relocating its base to Belarus and training Belarusian troops.
Poland has recently strengthened its alert posture by deploying two additional brigades to the border area facing Belarus in preparation for a possible invasion by the Wagner Group and Belarus.
On the same day, President Putin reiterated his position that Ukraine's counteroffensive is failing.
