Russia Detains Military Blogger Igor Girkin Who Criticized Putin
Mrs. Girkin's Claims on Telegram Channel
Russian authorities have arrested Igor Girkin, a nationalist military blogger and former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer, Reuters and other outlets reported on the 21st (local time).
His wife announced on Girkin's Telegram channel that her husband is currently in custody.
Girkin played a major role in Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and later organized pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. He now works as a military blogger and wields considerable influence in the local community.
While supporting the war in Ukraine, he has criticized the Russian government for failing to respond adequately to the conflict.
The U.S. news weekly Newsweek reported that on the 18th, Girkin posted on his Telegram channel urging a transfer of power, saying, "If President Vladimir Putin extends his term, the Russian people will not survive." Girkin also referred to President Putin as a "useless coward."
