Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will expand the installation and operation of Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse and heatwave shade shelters to help cool down during the summer heatwave.
The Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse was first operated in 2021 to protect residents' health from heat-related illnesses such as sudden dizziness, headaches, severe thirst, and dehydration caused by heatwave disasters during outdoor activities in summer. It operates until August, when heatwaves are at their peak, and has expanded by 2 locations compared to last year, operating a total of 11 outdoor heatwave rest shelters.
Refrigerators are mainly installed in outdoor resting areas such as riverside walking trails and sports parks to provide bottled water to heatwave-vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. A total of 6,600 bottles of 500ml bottled water are supplied three times daily, 200 bottles each time. In particular, Seongdong-gu supplies label-free bottled water considering the environment and installs collection bins near the Saemmul Warehouse for recycling. Additionally, autonomous disaster prevention teams at each community service center are designated as separate managers to prevent exclusive use of bottled water or storage of personal items inside the refrigerators, thereby improving efficiency.
Furthermore, the district plans to install 8 additional heatwave shade shelters and replace 30 old shelter benches starting from the end of July. The heatwave shade shelters operate until November and are currently in use at 154 locations. Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “Heatwaves outdoors can be another disaster threatening residents' lives and safety. We will continue to actively strive to ensure a healthy summer and improve convenience in daily life.”
