The desire for establishing a medical school is expanding from Changwon to the entire Gyeongnam region within the business community.
Changwon City, as the central city of the southeastern industrial belt, has a very high demand for "industrial health medical services," but there is no institution for training specialized medical personnel to handle industrial accidents. The city shares the view that establishing a medical school in Changwon is essential to build an emergency medical system for responding to urgent accidents.
Changwon City is urging the establishment of a medical school in the Changwon area in cooperation with Gyeongnam Province to address the shortage of medical personnel and medical service inequality within the province. In March of this year, the Changwon Medical School Attraction Citizens' Promotion Committee was launched, and the one million citizens one million signature campaign has exceeded its goal of 300,000 signatures. The aspirations of local residents demanding the establishment of a medical school are growing.
There is only one medical school in the Gyeongnam region with a quota of 76 students, which is far below the national average of 5.9 per 100,000 people, standing at 2.3 per 100,000 people. The number of doctors per 1,000 people is also insufficient at 1.17 in Gyeongnam compared to the national average of 2.13 and Seoul’s 3.37.
The shortage of medical personnel leads to inequality in medical services and regional medical disparities. In Gyeongnam, 14 out of 18 cities and counties are designated as emergency medical vulnerable areas, and the unmet medical rate is among the top one or two nationwide, making the medical utilization rate of Gyeongnam residents one of the lowest in the country.

Lee Sang-yeon, chairman of the Gyeongnam Employers Federation, stated, “The shortage of essential medical personnel is a problem that goes beyond Changwon to the entire Gyeongnam region,” adding, “To secure doctors within Gyeongnam Province and allocate them to medically underserved areas, the Gyeongnam Employers Federation will actively support the establishment of a medical school in Changwon by uniting the intentions of employers in the province.”
