Seoul City Provides 25 Billion KRW Special Grants to Districts for Heavy Rain Response
Additional 32.2 Billion Won Support Provided
Seoul City announced on the 17th that it will provide 25 billion KRW in special adjustment grants to autonomous districts to proactively prevent expected damage from the monsoon season, which officially began on the 13th.
Previously, in August last year, Seoul City urgently provided a total of 65.7 billion KRW to swiftly recover from human and property damage caused by record-breaking heavy rains not seen in 115 years. However, the city judged that reactive measures like those taken last year have limitations and plans to secure citizen safety through preventive actions.
In particular, this year, due to climate and environmental changes such as the Super El Ni?o phenomenon, an increase in rainfall was anticipated early on. Accordingly, in May, about 32.2 billion KRW was already allocated for preparations against concentrated summer heavy rains, including dredging of sewage pipelines and maintenance of rainwater inlets.
The supported budget will be used according to each autonomous district’s own plans for maintenance of sewage and river facilities, inspection of roads and slopes to prevent damage from heavy rains, and emergency measures such as setting up evacuation facilities in case of disaster victims.
If localized heavy rains continue and cause flood damage, the city plans to closely monitor the situation of rainstorm damage, promptly support disaster victims, and additionally provide emergency budgets to restore facilities, just as it did last year.
