Lee Gang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, "Citizen Safety First, Full Effort to Minimize Damage from Extreme Heavy Rain"
Strengthening Emergency Preparedness Including Inspections of Steep Slopes and Sharing Response Plans with Relevant Agencies
Emphasizing Thorough Preparation, Concrete Measures, and Proactive Evacuation Orders for Residents in Emergency Situations
On the 16th, Pohang City held an emergency "Response Meeting for the Risk of Landslide Casualties in Preparation for Extreme Heavy Rain" chaired by Mayor Lee Kang-deok at the City Hall Disaster and Safety Situation Room.
This meeting was organized to strengthen preparedness by sharing key management items for risk areas such as landslides caused by continuous heavy rain in recent days and response plans of related agencies, and to prevent casualties in advance through preemptive evacuation of residents. Department heads, eup/myeon/dong chiefs, and related organizations such as the Korea Rural Community Corporation attended and pledged to make every effort to prevent casualties caused by extreme heavy rain.
During the response meeting, weather forecasts including expected local heavy rain and recent nationwide damage caused by extreme heavy rain were shared. Each responsible department discussed response plans for high-risk areas prone to casualties such as landslide-prone zones, steep slopes, cut slopes, and large construction sites, and agreed to strengthen countermeasures.
Additionally, since the ground has weakened due to continuous rainfall, the probability of casualties caused by soil runoff and landslides is high if extreme heavy rain occurs. Therefore, surveillance and inspections of disaster-prone areas will be expanded, and the results of these inspections will be shared.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok urged the staff who are actively preparing to protect citizens from natural disasters to keep up their efforts until the very end, saying, "If even a slight sign of danger is detected, please take preemptive emergency measures to prevent casualties from occurring."
