Busan City, in preparation for the summer heatwave, will provide heatwave relief supplies to vulnerable elderly living alone in cooperation with the Busan City Comprehensive Support Center for Elderly Living Alone.
The city's heatwave relief project for elderly living alone targets vulnerable households (3,069 households) with poor housing conditions, providing cooling supplies such as summer blankets, clothing, and fans. A budget of 90 million KRW (70 million KRW from the city’s disaster relief fund and 20 million KRW from the Korea Housing Finance Corporation sponsorship) will be invested.
This support is aimed at representative vulnerable elderly living alone, those aged 75 or older, or elderly at high health risk, covering 3,069 households.
Low-income elderly often live in densely populated housing areas such as row houses, multi-family houses, and gosiwon (small rooms), where the perceived indoor temperature is higher, increasing their risk of exposure to heatwaves.
Accordingly, the city will provide heatwave relief supplies including summer blankets (1,239 households), summer clothing (1,250 households), and fans (580 households) funded by the Busan City disaster relief fund and the Korea Housing Finance Corporation sponsorship.
The city conducted a preliminary demand survey targeting 30,436 vulnerable elderly living alone across 16 districts and counties to select the supplies for this support.
The supplies will be delivered in July through personnel involved in elderly living alone protection projects in each district and county.
In particular, along with delivering the supplies, the city plans to check on the well-being of the elderly and provide guidance on heatwave preparedness and health precautions.
