The Eomgung and Banyeo Agricultural Products Inspection Centers of the Busan Health and Environment Research Institute announced that, as a result of conducting residual pesticide safety tests on 1,977 cases of auctioned agricultural products brought into the Eomgung and Banyeo Agricultural Products Wholesale Markets and agricultural products distributed in the market during the first half of this year, 97.8% (1,933 cases) met the permissible standards.
The agricultural products that were judged non-compliant consisted of 44 cases across 22 items (2.2%) as follows.
Leafy vegetables: 12 items, 29 cases ▲ Leaf-stem vegetables: 3 items, 4 cases ▲ Non-cucurbitaceous fruit vegetables: 2 items, 4 cases ▲ Herbs: 1 item, 3 cases ▲ Cucurbitaceous fruit vegetables: 1 item, 1 case ▲ Root vegetables: 1 item, 1 case ▲ Fruits: 1 item, 1 case ▲ Mushrooms: 1 item, 1 case exceeded the residual pesticide permissible limits.
Among these, 40 cases were auctioned agricultural products brought into the Eomgung and Banyeo Agricultural Products Wholesale Markets, and 4 cases were agricultural products distributed in the market.
The pesticide components detected in the non-compliant agricultural products totaled 33 types, including 18 insecticides such as terbufos and phorate, 12 fungicides such as prosimide and famoxadone, and 3 herbicides such as pendimethalin.
The 40 cases (totaling 2,579 kg) of non-compliant auctioned agricultural products brought into the Eomgung and Banyeo Agricultural Products Wholesale Markets were seized and disposed of by the Wholesale Market Management Office to block prior distribution, and the agricultural product producers were reported to the relevant administrative authorities for administrative action.
For the 4 cases of residual pesticide non-compliant agricultural products distributed in traditional markets, large supermarkets, and other retail outlets, the respective district offices and related departments were notified to suspend sales and recall the products.

Jung Seung-yoon, Director of the Busan Health and Environment Research Institute, stated, “Our institute is proactively conducting residual pesticide safety tests on agricultural products sold online and on new and unique varieties in response to changes in consumer environments. We are also conducting focused inspections on agricultural products vulnerable to safety issues during the summer and on high-demand agricultural products during the Chuseok holiday season.” He added, “We will do our best to ensure that safe agricultural products are distributed through proactive inspections of agricultural products with high risk of non-compliance or those with increased seasonal consumption.”
