Drunk Man Extorts 50 Million Won Using Smartphone Fingerprint Recognition... Man in His 30s Sent to Prosecution
A man in his 30s who forcibly made severely intoxicated individuals in Seoul's entertainment districts use fingerprint recognition on their smartphones to transfer money, extorting tens of millions of won, has been arrested and sent to prosecution.
On the 10th, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced that they had sent Jang (32, male) to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office under arrest on charges of robbery, theft, extortion, and computer-related fraud.
Jang is accused of extorting approximately 50 million won over 11 incidents targeting intoxicated individuals in entertainment districts such as Gangnam, Seocho, and Songpa in Seoul from July last year until last month. Jang selected his victims by scouting for intoxicated people and pretended to support them, then took them to places without closed-circuit television (CCTV) to commit the crimes. During this process, he also assaulted the victims.
At around 2:10 a.m. on the 27th of last month, Jang followed and assaulted an intoxicated man in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. He then forcibly used the victim's fingerprint on the smartphone to transfer 10 million won to his own account. In addition, he took out loans via internet banking and transferred the money to his own account, and threatened victims who could not remember the situation at the time with false information such as "You knocked down your pregnant wife" or "You vomited in the vehicle."
