Seeking Certification from Korea Records Institute for Highest Sales of a Single Brand
SPC Samlip's 'Jeongtong Cream Bread' first appeared on the market in 1964, a time when food was scarce, and is regarded as the original cream bread. The product features bread with small holes filled with sweet and soft white cream, offering a melt-in-the-mouth texture.
At that time, the authentic cream bread released by Samlip Confectionery Corporation was produced using a cutter originally designed for making biscuits. In the 1960s, when there were not many types of bread, consumers lined up every morning at the Samlip Confectionery Corporation factory in Daerim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, to buy the authentic cream bread. The company operated three dedicated bread production lines 24 hours a day, yet supply was still insufficient due to its popularity. The price was also quite high, so those who spent their childhood during that era remember savoring each bite of the authentic cream bread.
There were difficulties in bringing the authentic cream bread to the market. During development, if the fermentation room's humidity was low, the bread would rise like a hat. After repeated experiments to find the optimal humidity that could preserve the chewy texture, which is key to the bread's taste, a steady seller was born.
The authentic cream bread has been loved by consumers for 60 years, selling a cumulative total of 1.9 billion units since its launch, making it a national brand. SPC Samlip is pursuing official certification of the authentic cream bread through the Korea Record Institute (KRI). They submitted an application for the "highest sales record for a single brand in the cream bread category (retail sector)" based on cumulative sales of 320 million units over 10 years from January 2013 to the end of last year.
If the cream breads sold over 10 years were converted into length, it would be approximately 37,042 km, which is equivalent to 2,093 round trips to Mount Everest, which stands at 8,848 meters above sea level. The Korea Record Institute is a certification authority that recognizes outstanding records in Korea as official KRI records and requests certification reviews from international record organizations such as the World Records Committee (WRC) on behalf of challengers.

An SPC Samlip representative said, "We expect this record certification to be an opportunity to announce that the authentic cream bread is Korea's representative 'national bread,'" adding, "We plan to continue challenging not only for certification from the Korea Record Institute but also for world record certifications."
