The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Requests Korea's Continued Participation in IAEA's Follow-up Verification of Fukushima
Yoo Guk-hee, Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the 8th and requested Korea's participation in the IAEA's follow-up verification regarding the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Chairperson Yoo had a meeting with Director General Grossi for about 30 minutes around 4 p.m. at the Government Seoul Office. Director General Grossi arrived in Seoul the previous afternoon via Gimpo Airport.
During the meeting, Director General Grossi explained to Chairperson Yoo the scientific and technical review of the comprehensive report recently released by the IAEA concerning the Fukushima nuclear power plant's contaminated water discharge plan. Chairperson Yoo requested continuous verification by the IAEA along with ongoing participation from Korean experts and specialized institutions. In response, Director General Grossi said, "I will seek ways to make that possible."

Previously, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), under the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, participated in the IAEA's cross-verification of Fukushima contaminated water samples together with specialized institutions from the United States, France, Switzerland, and others.
