Macy's Fireworks and the Debut of a Drone Show
Environmental Concerns Lead Cities to Embrace New Traditions
The annual Macy's fireworks display in New York City on Independence Day (July 4th) is well known for its spectacular grandeur. This year, a staggering 60,000 fireworks lit up the night sky over Manhattan's East River.
For this fireworks show, Macy's sourced fireworks from 13 countries around the world, positioned five barges on the East River, and operated a dedicated team of 60 licensed pyrotechnicians. It is estimated that about 3 million spectators watched the fireworks in person this year. Especially at Long Island City’s riverside, a prime spot to view the fireworks against the Manhattan skyline, the crowd was so dense that it was difficult to take a single step. On the morning of the rainy day, teams with mats were already securing spots in this area.
The biggest highlight of this year’s Macy's fireworks event, which drew a massive crowd, was the ‘drone’ show. For the first time ever, Macy's held a drone show before the fireworks began. 500 drones formed the shape of a radio in sync with Whitney Houston’s song, then transformed into the American flag. The moment that drew the loudest cheers from the audience was when the 500 drones lit up green lights and slowly formed the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty, set against the Manhattan skyline, slowly rotated in time with the music.
Naomi Penson, a New Yorker who witnessed the scene, exclaimed, "I have seen Macy's fireworks many times, but I have never been this thrilled." Gina Lee, who lives in Long Island City, said, "The Statue of Liberty symbolizes so much. It was an even more beautiful sight because it was New York and Independence Day." Local media outlets, including Fox 5 New York, all focused on the drone show, saying, "The Statue of Liberty came to life in New York City's drone show." Will Koss, the senior producer in charge of Macy's fireworks event, said, "We are delighted to present New York’s first-ever drone show to surprise the audience before the fireworks start."
In some parts of the United States, drone shows have completely replaced fireworks for this year’s Independence Day celebrations. Considering that fireworks on Independence Day night have long been a tradition for Americans, this marks a significant change. This shift is closely related to the growing negative public opinion about large-scale fireworks in recent years. Ahead of this year’s Independence Day, major newspapers such as The New York Times (NYT) and The Washington Post (WP) expressed concerns about fire hazards and air quality deterioration caused by fireworks held simultaneously in major cities.
Just a month ago, the New York skyline was eerily covered in a vivid orange hue due to Canadian wildfires, resembling a scene from a horror movie. Experts point out that large-scale fireworks generate fine dust similar to that produced by wildfire smoke. About 10 minutes after the Macy's fireworks event began, smoke thickened to the point where the Manhattan skyline was no longer visible. The next day, the NYT reported that the air quality index (AQI) in cities across the U.S., including Seattle and Los Angeles, was measured as ‘unhealthy.’ Moreover, the period including Independence Day is also known as the ‘wildfire season,’ when fire risks are high.
Salt Lake City, Utah, is a representative city that gave up large-scale fireworks this year due to air quality concerns. Instead, they chose a drone show to celebrate Independence Day. Boulder, Colorado, surrounded by dense forests, also opted for a drone show instead of fireworks. The state government stated, "Switching to a drone show was not an easy decision," adding, "We considered various factors such as climate change and fire risks." In Minneapolis, lasers replaced fireworks. Some regions shortened the duration of fireworks displays.
