Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, has become a hot topic after receiving near-praise commentary from the labor union on the occasion of his 1st anniversary in office.
The Yeongdeungpo Branch of the Korean Government Employees' Union (Branch Chief Ji Min-su) recently issued a statement saying, "It has already been one year since Mayor Choi Ho-kwon's term began amid unprecedented heavy rains. We thank the mayor for his tireless efforts day and night to improve residents' welfare and enhance employee happiness, and sincerely congratulate him on his first anniversary."
They added, "We believe that the past year under Mayor Choi was the beginning of a journey toward realizing true local autonomy and fulfilling residents' hopes, leading to a happy future city of Yeongdeungpo."
In particular, over the past year, Mayor Choi has been appreciated for his dedication to resolving long-standing local issues with a professional administrative mindset, aiming to realize genuine local autonomy focused solely on the residents.
In this context, he urged employees to strictly maintain political neutrality when carrying out their duties and to base policy decisions solely on the public interest. This allowed public officials to take pride and devote themselves more to fair execution of duties according to laws and principles, the statement evaluated.
They also stated, "The past year can be proudly called the 'Year One of Employee Welfare Excellence in Yeongdeungpo,'" and praised the mayor's motto, "Employees must be happy for residents to be happy." Through the establishment and strengthening of various institutional benefits, he comforted employees weary from heavy workloads.
Above all, he was highly praised for voluntarily taking on the role of an umbrella shielding against various external pressures and creating a work environment full of motivation, enabling employees to focus solely on their tasks and making Yeongdeungpo a place other local governments want to come to.
The labor union concluded by once again congratulating Mayor Choi Ho-kwon on his first anniversary.
Prior to the recent closing of the Yeongdeungpo District Council, Mayor Choi experienced the pain of the council cutting 23% of the supplementary budget, making it impossible to carry out projects for the residents.
Amid this, before the opening ceremony of the 9th Yeongdeungpo District Council’s 1st anniversary held on June 6, related organizations such as the Yeongdeungpo Branch of the Korean Federation of Arts and Culture Organizations, Yeongdeungpo District Sports Council, and the Yeongdeungpo Branch of the Agent Orange Veterans Association held a picket protest at the event entrance to protest the budget cuts, drawing attention.
They reportedly strongly protested the cuts to allowances for volunteer guides at senior centers and operating expenses for community sports classes.
In this situation, it is known that the labor union issued this commentary to support and encourage the mayor.
