Ulsan City Takes Action to Eradicate Illegal Kitchen Waste Disposers
"Environmental Pollution Induction, Increase in Sewage Treatment Costs"
Illegal kitchen waste disposers are expected to be eradicated in Ulsan.
The Ulsan city government will launch a large-scale campaign by November to eliminate the use of illegal kitchen waste disposers that cause water pollution, foul odors, and sewer blockages.
According to Ulsan city, as the use of waste disposers has recently increased, cases of some companies falsely advertising their products as certified or selling illegal products that have been arbitrarily modified or altered after certification are on the rise.
Ulsan city, together with the five districts and counties, will start a monthly street promotion campaign at 11 a.m. on the 30th around Lotte Department Store, beginning in Nam-gu district and touring the five districts and counties.
Through this promotional activity, Ulsan city will inform the public that the use of illegal kitchen waste disposers can cause serious environmental pollution. It will explain that excessive pollutants entering sewage treatment plants lead to increased sewage treatment costs and significant expenses in operating environmental and sewage treatment facilities.
At the same time, the campaign will promote that only products certified by the Korea Water Technology Certification Institute are allowed for use in general households.
According to the Ministry of Environment's notice, only products certified by authorized certification bodies are permitted to be used for kitchen waste disposers. Over 80% of food waste must be collected in a recovery container and disposed of as food waste, with less than 20% discharged into the sewer system.
