The vigorous journey of Gwanak-gu under the 8th elected term (Mayor Park Jun-hee), aimed at realizing a ‘Together, the Best Gwanak-gu’ where everyone is happy, is progressing smoothly with innovation, communication, and cooperation as its core principles, showing achievements in various fields.
Over the past year, Gwanak-gu has steadily achieved the promised action tasks with residents in areas such as innovative and win-win economy, an inclusive Gwanak community, youth special city, top-tier education and culture, clean and safe living environment, and innovative Gwanak Office.
First, based on the foundation and achievements of Gwanak S-Valley continued from the 7th elected term, the district is focusing on promoting an upgraded ‘Gwanak S-Valley 2.0’ in the 8th term. Sixteen startup infrastructure facilities have been established in Gwanak-gu, which was once a barren land for startups, resulting in more than a 12-fold increase in resident companies, a 24-fold increase in annual sales, and a 63-fold increase in annual investment attraction, sustaining ultra-fast growth.
The district is also carefully nurturing a win-win local economy by supporting alley commercial districts and traditional markets, which are the capillaries of the local economy. A total of 3.3 billion KRW has been additionally invested over four years in 10 major alley commercial districts to create distinctive commercial areas and strengthen competitiveness. The ‘Starlight Sinsari Commercial District Renaissance,’ a project worth 8 billion KRW aimed at revitalizing the commercial area around Sillim Station, has entered its fourth year of stabilization.
According to the ‘2022 Seoul City Commercial Lease Survey,’ the monthly sales per 1㎡ ranked high with Sillim Station at 4th place and Sharosugil at 5th place, and the average monthly sales per 1㎡ was 437,000 KRW, making Gwanak-gu’s commercial districts rank first.
The district is creating an inclusive Gwanak community by promoting senior welfare through the construction of a senior citizens’ center, 50 Plus Center, and a public senior comprehensive welfare center, as well as expanding support centers for single-person households, reflecting the district’s high proportion of single-person households. Notably, the ‘Gwanak Disabled Center,’ a complex facility to enhance the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, is scheduled for completion in July.
So far, the district has focused on providing dynamic activity and active exchange spaces for youth, and in April, opened the ‘Gwanak Youth Center,’ a comprehensive activity hub for young people. Centered around the Gwanak Youth Center, young people are expected to grow into key talents driving regional development by managing operations and proposing policies themselves.
The ‘Starlight Naerimcheon,’ which residents already highly appreciate as a healing space, is being developed into specialized spaces at key points in line with the Sillim Line light rail opened last year, with plans to restore the unrecovered stream section in front of Seoul National University’s main gate by June next year.
Additionally, 24 neighborhood parks at the foot of Gwanaksan Mountain are being developed into three specialized zones to create a pleasant and clean living environment where people and nature harmonize. Efforts are also underway to expand spaces in high demand by residents, such as the creation of Namhyeon Small Park and Nangok Smart Public Parking Lot.

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, “Over the past year, overcoming numerous challenges and achieving remarkable results and innovations in various fields was possible because both residents and public officials worked wholeheartedly as one.”
