At the meeting, it was decided to build the Pohang Municipal Museum on a site within the Yeonorang Seonyeo Theme Park, and to organize the museum exhibition halls to reflect Pohang's identity.
Chairman Choi Kwang-sik explained the reason for selecting the site for the municipal museum, stating, "The site within Yeonorang Seonyeo Theme Park is expected to form a marine history and cultural resource cluster along with the creation of the National Marine Garden in nearby Homigot and Guryongpo, the attraction of the National Fisheries Museum, and the construction of the Haenyeo Culture Center, which will enhance the agglomeration effect of cultural resource facilities."
He also said, "The site was selected considering that the four-lane expansion and paving construction of the entrance road to Yeonorang Seonyeo Theme Park is scheduled, and that accessibility will increase due to the construction of Dongbin Bridge, making transportation more convenient."
At the meeting, the exhibition direction of the Pohang Municipal Museum was set as 'Pohang's Identity,' and it was decided to organize exhibits including records of Pohang's history from prehistoric times to the present, artifacts excavated in Pohang, and a children's exhibition hall.
The city has appointed Professor Emeritus Choi Kwang-sik of Korea University (former Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism) as the advisory committee chairman for the construction of the Pohang Municipal Museum and has made various efforts such as benchmarking best practices by visiting the National Museum of Korea and the Seoul Museum of History.
Based on the discussions at the advisory committee meeting, Pohang City plans to apply for a preliminary feasibility evaluation for the establishment of a public museum to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in July. Subsequently, after on-site inspections by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the feasibility of the construction will be notified.
