Daejeon City Conducts Demonstration for Replacing Foreign GPUs with Domestic AI Semiconductors
The Daejeon City consortium has been selected for the ‘AI Semiconductor Application Demonstration Support Project’ led by the Ministry of Science and ICT. According to the selection results, the consortium will receive 630 million KRW in national funding to carry out the project.
On the 28th, Daejeon City stated that the project involves replacing foreign-made GPUs used in the AI CCTV system at City Hall Station on Urban Railway Line 1 and the AI condition recognition system for railway facilities with domestically produced AI semiconductors, followed by demonstrating the application services.
Foreign-made GPUs are expensive, consume a lot of power, and generate significant heat, making continuous operation difficult. Despite their effectiveness in ensuring citizen safety, this has prevented expansion across the entire Daejeon urban railway system.
In contrast, domestically produced AI semiconductors have advantages such as lower power consumption and heat generation, superior performance compared to existing solutions, and relatively lower cost.
Accordingly, Daejeon City plans to replace foreign-made GPUs with domestic AI semiconductors through this project and operate and demonstrate a video-based safety system applying a new AI model training method.
The project is led and promoted by Daejeon Transportation Corporation. Additionally, Sapeon Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SK Telecom, will supply its self-developed AI semiconductors; Daejeon-based company Altist Co., Ltd. will develop AI models and application services; and RFCom Co., Ltd. will be responsible for building the testbed.
