Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Returns to Korea After 5 Years... Collaboration with Yeol-eum Son
Inkinnen Conducts KBS Symphony Orchestra
Performance of Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3
Pianist Son Yeol-eum and Pietari Inkinen, music director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra, will collaborate in performing Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall this coming September. Son Yeol-eum and Music Director Inkinen will also share the stage during the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie's tour in Korea. Inkinen serves as the chief conductor and artistic director of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie.
Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 became more familiar to us last year when pianist Lim Yunchan performed it in the finals of the Van Cliburn Competition. The piece reflects Rachmaninoff's transcendental will to surpass his own limits as a pianist and is considered one of the most challenging works for pianists to perform.
Before collaborating with Son Yeol-eum, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie plans to open their program with Wagner's "Tannh?user Overture." Wagner is regarded as one of Music Director Inkinen's specialties. Inkinen was invited to the Bayreuth Festival in Germany in 2021, where he conducted Wagner's "Die Walk?re," and this year he is scheduled to conduct the entire "Ring Cycle" ("Der Ring des Nibelungen") at the Bayreuth Festival.
In the second half of the concert, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Brahms' Symphony No. 3 will be performed.
The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie's Korea tour will begin on September 13 at the Seoul Arts Center, followed by performances at Sejong Arts Center (September 14), Cheonan Arts Center (September 15), Gwangju Arts Center (September 16), Tongyeong International Music Hall (September 17), Busan Citizens Hall (September 19), and Bucheon Art Center (September 20).
This tour marks the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie's first visit to Korea in five years. Their most recent Korea tour was in June 2018, during which they performed Beethoven's "Egmont Overture" and Brahms' Symphony No. 4, among others. At that time, Music Director Inkinen also conducted the orchestra. Inkinen has been the chief conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie since 2017.

The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie was formed in 2007 through the merger of the Saarbr?cken Radio Symphony Orchestra (under Saarland Broadcasting) and the Kaiserslautern Radio Symphony Orchestra (under Southwest German Broadcasting). The predecessor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the Saarbr?cken Radio Symphony Orchestra, was also the orchestra where conductor Myung-Whun Chung served as principal conductor in 1984. Chung has mentioned that this period was the most important experience in his conducting career.
