Gwangyang-si Draws Blueprint for Baealdo and Doseonguksa Cultural Tourism Belt
Creation of Baedo Media Facade
Linked with Baegunsan Area Tangible and Intangible Doseonguksa Specialized Materials
On the 27th at 10 a.m., Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced that it held an interim briefing session on the establishment of the basic plans for the Baealdo Media Facade project and the Doseon Guksa Cultural Tourism Belt project at the situation room.
Presided over by Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa, the briefing session was attended by about 30 people including heads of related departments and representatives of local residents. The session was divided into two parts, during which reports on each project were presented, followed by opinion gathering and a Q&A session.
The first part, the ‘Baealdo Media Facade Creation’ project, aims to transform Baealdo into a stay-type nighttime tourism hub by producing media art inspired by Yun Dong-ju’s poem “Counting the Stars at Night.” This project is being promoted as part of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s ‘Inter-local Government Cooperation New Deal Project.’
The city’s strategy is to establish a foundation for the Seomjin River tourism era by creating a differentiated media facade themed ‘Dongju’s Starlight Garden’ in the Mangdeok Port and Baealdo areas, which have recently emerged as hot spots. The media facade will feature imaginative waterfalls, star forests, the poet’s face, and more.
The second part, the ‘Doseon Guksa Cultural Tourism Belt Creation’ project, aims to develop healing tourism content by linking tangible and intangible Doseon Guksa specialized materials scattered throughout the Baegunsan area, thereby building eco-tourism and completing a tourism belt connected to the Seomjin River and Gubongsan areas.
Fifteen projects identified to expand the tourism infrastructure in the Baegunsan area include △ five hardware projects such as the Global Pungsu Village and Camellia Forest Garden, △ four software projects such as specialized nighttime tourism content development, Doseon figure resource utilization, and sacred site designation, and △ six linked contents such as the Gwangyang Baegun Train and carbon-zero smart mobility.
The city plans to complete the task of establishing the Doseon Guksa Cultural Tourism Belt by September through continuous multilateral consultations with advisory committee members, experts, major institutions and organizations, and related departments, and will actively propose the project to central government ministries including the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in cooperation with Jeollanam-do.
Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa said, “Tourism plays a key role as a future industry in revitalizing the local economy,” adding, “The city is drawing a tourism blueprint for Gwangyang to open the era of ten million tourists and is making every effort to realize it.”
He continued, “The Baegunsan area and Seomjin River area, along with Gwangyang-eup and Gubongsan area, are core tourism hubs in the southern central region of the South Coast,” and urged, “Department heads should take an interest in the meaningful opinions raised at this interim briefing session, thoroughly review them, and do their best to reflect them in the final stage.”
