The British daily newspaper The Telegraph reported on the 27th (local time) that "Garcia has been listed among the players participating in the final qualifying round for The Open, which will be held on the 4th of next month." The final qualifying round for The Open involves 287 players competing in 36 holes of stroke play, with 16 players earning entry.
Sergio Garcia has attracted attention by registering to participate in the final qualifying round of The Open.

Moreover, his world ranking has dropped to 209th, leaving him no choice but to go through qualifying to participate in The Open. Garcia is a prime example of a player whose world ranking rapidly declined after moving to LIV Golf and not receiving ranking points. He also qualified through the preliminary rounds to participate in the US Open held last month, marking his 24th consecutive appearance.
Garcia burst onto the scene in 1999 as a 19-year-old runner-up at the major PGA Championship. He has won 16 times on the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) and 11 times on the PGA Tour. In 2017, he won the Masters, finally overcoming the stigma of never having won a major.

Garcia was once regarded as a player on par with the 'Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods (USA). He first competed in The Open in 1996 and has appeared 25 times through last year. Since 1998, he has participated 24 consecutive times. His best results were two runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2014. The Open will be held over four days starting from the 20th of next month at Royal Liverpool in England.
