Jeonnam Hwasun Middle School Wins Middle School Division at Jeonnam Superintendent of Education Baseball Tournament
The Hwasun Middle School baseball team (coach Lee Ki-ju) announced on the 26th that they won the championship in the middle school division (U-16) of the 55th Jeollanam-do Superintendent of Education Student Baseball Tournament.
The tournament was held over three days from the 22nd to the 24th at Hampyeong Baseball Stadium in Jeollanam-do, with seven teams participating: Hwasun Middle School, Seji Middle School, Yeosu Middle School, Suncheon Isu Middle School, Yeongsan Middle School, Sehan SC, and Gwangyang SC.
Representing Hwasun, Hwasun Middle School trailed 5:7 against Gwangyang SC until the 6th inning in their first game, but rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning with a walk-off game-winning hit by Son Min-seong to win 8:7.
The next day, they won the semifinals 2:1 against Suncheon Isu Middle School, and in the finals, they defeated Yeosu Middle School 5:1 to claim the championship trophy.
Hwasun Middle School’s Bae Jong-yoon (3rd year) was selected as the Most Valuable Player, Hong Jun-seo (3rd year) received the Best Pitcher Award, Son Min-seong (3rd year) earned the RBI Award, and coach Lee Ki-ju was honored with the Outstanding Coach Award.
Team captain Kim Ji-heon (3rd year) said, “We are grateful to coach Lee Ki-ju, as well as coaches Kim Sun-hyun, Jeon Se-min, and Yoon Hee-young for their guidance, and to our parents for their encouragement and support. I want to share this joy of winning with my teammates and will train even harder after entering high school to become a great player.”
The Hwasun Middle School baseball team was founded in March 1986 and has produced professional players such as Kia’s Kim Sun-bin, Doosan’s Hong Geon-hee and Lee Hyung-beom, Samsung’s Lee Seung-hyun, NC’s Jung Jin-ki, and Hanwha’s Kim In-hwan.
The team has achieved excellent results except during periods without tournaments due to COVID-19, including winning Jeollanam-do’s first bronze medal at the 46th National Youth Sports Festival, winning the 2021 Jeonnam Association President’s Cup and Governor’s Cup baseball tournaments, and winning the 13th KIA Tigers Honam Region Middle School Baseball Tournament in 2019.
