Gyeonggi Fire Department Reports Highest Flood and Wind Damage Claims in August... 40% Flood Damage
In the past three years, 4 out of 10 emergency 119 calls related to flood and wind damage incidents in the Gyeonggi region were reported as flood damage. Of the flood damage reports, 55% were concentrated in August.
According to the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters, the number of flood and wind damage incident reports received by Gyeonggi Fire was 3,810 in 2020, 535 in 2021, and 3,948 in 2022, totaling 8,293 over the past three years. By type of report, flooding accounted for the largest share with 3,314 cases, or 40%. This was followed by ▲isolation 352 cases (4.2%) ▲collapse 202 cases (2.4%) ▲landslide 183 cases (2.2%), among others.
The number of rescued individuals totaled 404, including 159 isolated persons, 125 flood victims, 65 landslide victims, 10 collapse victims, and 45 others.
By location, roads accounted for the highest number with 2,265 cases, or 27.3%. This was followed by multi-family housing with 1,263 cases, commercial buildings with 1,178 cases, houses with 1,110 cases, and apartments with 277 cases.
By month, 4,561 cases (55%) were reported in August, showing a concentration of reports. June (1,410 cases) and July (1,077 cases) also had a high number of reports.
By city and county, Hwaseong-si reported 579 cases (7%), Suwon-si 556 cases (6.7%), and Yongin-si 554 cases (6.7%), in that order.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters urged residents to evacuate to safe places avoiding low-lying and frequently flooded areas, as well as mountain and valley slopes during heavy rain and landslides, and to frequently check weather conditions.

Jo Seon-ho, head of the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "We will carefully analyze the 119 flood and wind damage call and dispatch status to devote ourselves to preventing loss of life and property damage from flood and wind disasters this summer," adding, "We will continue to analyze various data to provide information to the residents."
