Pregnant Woman Who Hit and Killed an 80-Year-Old Jaywalker... "Suspended Sentence"
500 Million Won Fine Suspended Sentence
"Defendant's Negligence Not Severe and Agreement Reached with Bereaved Family"
A pregnant woman in her 30s was given a suspended sentence with a fine after fatally hitting an elderly man in his 80s who was jaywalking and whom she failed to notice in time while driving her car.
According to Yonhap News on the 24th, Judge Jo Su-yeon of the Criminal Division 4 at Cheongju District Court announced that A (32), who was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (causing death), was given a suspended sentence with a fine of 5 million won.
On September 21 last year, around 4:40 p.m., A was driving her car and making a left turn at an intersection in Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk Province, when she hit an elderly woman in her 80s who was jaywalking while pushing a walking aid. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital but passed away two days later. It is known that A stated to the investigation authorities that she "did not notice the victim in time."
Judge Jo explained the sentencing by saying, "Considering comprehensively that A’s negligence while turning left at a low speed at the time does not seem greater than that of the victim, that the bereaved family reached a settlement and does not want punishment, and that A is a pregnant woman raising two young children amid financial difficulties."

A suspended sentence defers the pronouncement of a sentence for a certain period for minor crimes. If the period passes without incident, the sentence is waived. Therefore, A does not have to pay the fine immediately, and after two years from the date of the suspended sentence, it is as if no guilty verdict was pronounced.
