Dead bodies of great white shark and bull shark found consecutively off Sokcho coast
Great white shark, aggressive shark attacking people
Coast Guard urges "fishermen and swimmers to be cautious"
Two shark carcasses, including a great white shark known to attack humans, were consecutively found off the coast of Sokcho, Gangwon Province.
According to the Sokcho Coast Guard on the 23rd, at around 4:20 a.m., a fisherman operating about 5.1 km (approximately 2.8 nautical miles) from Sokcho Port discovered a dead shark and reported it. Then, at around 7:30 a.m., another shark carcass was found by a fisherman near Jangsa Port, about 2.7 km (approximately 1.5 nautical miles) offshore.
The shark found off Sokcho Port measured approximately 240 cm in length and 180 cm in girth. According to expert analysis, it was estimated to be a non-aggressive sand tiger shark. However, the shark found off Jangsa Port, measuring 195 cm in length and about 95 cm in girth, is believed to be a great white shark, one of the most aggressive sharks known to attack humans.

The great white shark, well known from the movie 'Jaws,' can reach a maximum length of 6.5 meters and is a representative predatory shark commonly found in temperate and tropical coastal waters. In response, the Coast Guard has informed local marine leisure operators such as surfers and divers about the shark sightings and urged them to exercise caution. They have also requested local governments to broadcast warning messages to prevent accidents and have strengthened coastal safety patrols through local police stations.
A Coast Guard official stated, "Since an aggressive shark was found in coastal waters, fishermen, leisure activity participants, and beachgoers should be especially cautious," adding, "If a shark is spotted nearby, please report it to the Coast Guard immediately."
Earlier, on the 13th, a great white shark carcass measuring 1.5 meters in length and weighing 40 kg was found and reported to the Coast Guard near Bijari Beach on Soan Island, Wando County, Jeollanam-do. Additionally, in April last year, a blue shark was caught in a fisherman's net about 2.8 km east of Bongpo Port, Goseong County, Gangwon Province, near Sokcho where the recent shark carcasses were found. This blue shark measured 3.2 meters in length and about 2 meters in girth.

If you encounter a shark, avoid actions that may provoke it, such as shouting or splashing, and leave the area immediately. If you are carrying any harvested seafood, separate it from your body right away.
