Establishing New Growth Engine through Designation of Nokdong New Port as a Trade Port

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Yeong-min) announced that it will "promote the re-designation of Nokdong New Port from a locally managed coastal port to a locally managed trade port." On the 22nd, at the ‘2023 Dialogue between Governor Kim Young-rok and the Residents of Gohung-gun’ held at Palyoung Gymnasium in Gohung-gun, residents voiced their request to designate Nokdong New Port as a trade port.

On that day, Kim Hee-woong, chairman of the Gohung Port Labor Union, stated, “Nokdong New Port serves as a hub for land and sea transportation networks within Jeollanam-do, and a variety of products such as Gohung Haechangman rice, gim, yuzu, citrus, and Samdasoo are transported through it.” He added, “Recently, with the signing of an agreement with Jeju, cargo volume is expected to surge, so please make efforts to have Nokdong New Port designated as a trade port.”

According to the county, Nokdong New Port is currently a locally managed coastal port, handling 170,000 vehicles and 270,000 passengers annually. The cargo volume transported nationwide through Nokdong New Port reaches 940,000 tons, and this year, about 1.2 million tons of cargo (including Samdasoo and mandarins) are expected to be transported, with steady growth in cargo volume anticipated.

Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do responded to the proposal, saying, “We will cooperate with Gohung-gun to develop feasibility logic so that Nokdong New Port can be designated as a trade port, and we will strive to ensure that the proposal is reflected through close consultations with related ministries such as the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.”

Earlier, on the 16th, during an inspection of Nokdong New Port for exchange and cooperation with Gohung-gun, Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, was present when County Governor Gong Yeong-min stated, “Through logistics cooperation with Jeju, we will foster Nokdong Port as a logistics hub for shipments to and from Jeju.”

Meanwhile, the dialogue with residents was held under the theme ‘Closer to the Residents, a Happy Meeting,’ and was attended by about 250 people including Governor Kim Young-rok, Gohung-gun County Governor Gong Yeong-min, the chairman of the Gohung-gun Council, members of Jeollanam-do and Gohung-gun councils, journalists, heads of social organizations, related officials, and residents.
