The 119 Citizen Water Rescue Team consists of 40 to 60 members per beach, including 36 team leaders who are fire service officers, and will be responsible for the safety of residents and tourists.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters has completed preparations for operating the 119 Citizen Water Rescue Team by providing training on beach safety management and control room operation guidelines to the 119 team leaders, as well as first aid and water rescue training to waterfront safety personnel (volunteer firefighters) and civilian members.
The members carry manuals on health and fitness management, as well as response guidelines for harmful marine creatures such as jellyfish, sharks, and sea snakes, and manuals for responding to marine environmental hazards like rip currents and tidal channels, and they conduct regular education and training.
Additionally, centered on the 119 rescue team, special rescue training is conducted to prepare for summer water accidents, mastering various rescue techniques to enable rapid response in emergencies, focusing all efforts on achieving zero water-related fatalities.
Chief Kim Su-hwan said, “We are making multifaceted efforts to minimize water safety accidents,” and added, “We ask vacationers to enjoy safe water activities by following the instructions of the 119 Citizen Water Rescue Team.”
