"Mother-in-law Says 'No Right to Turn on Air Conditioner'... Chinese Daughter-in-law Nearly Miscarried"
Prohibition on Air Conditioner Use Even at 38°C
"My Son Bears All the Costs You Incur"
A woman who was 20 weeks pregnant in China nearly suffered a miscarriage after enduring a heatwave without air conditioning. It is reported that the woman’s mother-in-law had prohibited her from using the air conditioner, sparking a wave of criticism from local netizens.
According to a report on the 15th (local time) by Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP), a woman from Guangdong Province in southern China received emergency treatment in an intensive care unit and narrowly escaped the risk of miscarriage.
After becoming pregnant, the woman was advised by her husband to quit her job and was focusing solely on preparing for childbirth at home. However, tragedy began when her mother-in-law, who lived in the same house, started to “control” her.
Currently, southern China is suffering from an extreme heatwave with temperatures around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. On the 10th, the temperature reportedly approached 38 degrees Celsius. Unable to bear the heat, the woman tried to turn on the air conditioner, but her mother-in-law stopped her.

Eventually, the woman experienced breathing difficulties in the intense heat. Before losing consciousness, she managed to call the emergency hotline and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she received treatment. A local doctor said, “If she had not received treatment in time, she would have miscarried.”

Upon hearing this story, Chinese netizens poured criticism on the woman’s mother-in-law. Sharp reactions followed, such as “Do such mother-in-laws still exist?” and “If I were the daughter-in-law, I would have completely ignored my mother-in-law.”

Meanwhile, southern China is reported to be suffering from extreme heatwaves during the summer. If air conditioning is not used promptly, people’s lives can be at risk. According to SCMP, a man in his 50s in China died of acute heart failure last July after not using air conditioning. In 2017, a woman in Shanghai died from the heatwave while recovering postpartum after childbirth.
