The prosecution is reported to have charged them with "murder accompanied by torture." If the Chinese couple is found guilty, they could face life imprisonment.
Specific details regarding the torture charges have not been disclosed.
Earlier, on the 6th, Byeon was found dead wrapped in a red cloth in a pond at a construction site in Kandal Province near Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
At that time, local police analyzed fingerprints on the cloth surrounding Byeon's body and arrested the Chinese couple who owned the hospital. They are known to operate a medical clinic in Phnom Penh.
Later, the woman was identified as BJ Ayoung, an internet broadcaster traveling in Cambodia. Byeon had been active as "BJ Ayoung" on AfreecaTV and YouTube, with 160,000 subscribers on AfreecaTV and 250,000 followers on Instagram, making her an influencer.
She reportedly entered Cambodia on the 2nd with an acquaintance and disappeared after saying she was "going to the hospital."
The Chinese couple told the police that BJ Ayoung had a seizure and died while receiving treatment at their hospital on the 4th, and they disposed of the body. Byeon is believed to have received an intravenous drip or serum injection at the hospital.
Contrary to the Chinese couple’s statement, traces suggesting assault were later found on Byeon’s body. At the time of discovery, her face was severely swollen, and bruises were reported. Additionally, her neck was found broken. This has led to suspicions that the Chinese couple may have administered injections later to cover up the assault.
Following the revelation that the Cambodian prosecution charged the Chinese couple with "murder accompanied by torture," the impact surrounding Byeon’s death case has intensified.
Earlier, Cambodian investigators reportedly focused on whether the wounds on Byeon’s body were inflicted before death or if the body was damaged during disposal after death. Cambodian police have stated that an autopsy is necessary to determine the exact cause of death, but the bereaved family is reportedly opposed to the autopsy.
