Who is Mr. A, the person replicating Samsung Electronics' 'Semiconductor Factory'?
Prosecution Charges Mr. A with Violation of Industrial Technology Protection Act
Semiconductor Expert Formerly Executive at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix
Active Overseas in Taiwan and China Since 2015
The prosecution has indicted a semiconductor expert, who previously served as an executive at Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor (now SK Hynix), on charges including domestic technology leakage. This expert was known in the semiconductor industry as a master of yield (the ratio of good products among manufactured items) and was reputed for his eloquence and occasionally aggressive demeanor.
On the 13th, the semiconductor industry was stirred after the prosecution announced the previous day that it had arrested and indicted semiconductor expert Mr. A (65). This was due to an unprecedented scale of attempted technology leakage. Attention is also focused on the fact that Mr. A, a well-known figure in the industry, is connected to this issue.
Earlier, on the 12th, the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office's Defense Industry and Industrial Technology Crime Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Park Jin-sung) arrested and indicted Mr. A, a former Samsung Electronics executive, on charges including violation of the Industrial Technology Protection Act, and indicted six accomplices without detention on the same charges. It is alleged that they stole Samsung Electronics' trade secrets and national core technology semiconductor factory design data to establish a replica production facility near a Samsung Electronics semiconductor plant in China.
Mr. A is a semiconductor manufacturing expert who served as an executive at both Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor, the two leading domestic semiconductor companies. He began his career in research and later achieved outstanding results in manufacturing fields such as productivity improvement. The core of Korean semiconductor technology lies in manufacturing capability. Even using the same materials and equipment, they produce more semiconductors than overseas competitors, while maintaining fewer defects. This is the background behind Mr. A's fame in the industry.
Industry insiders describe Mr. A as having an eloquent and showman-like personality with an outgoing nature. Due to his clear personality, he was also evaluated to sometimes show aggressive traits.
Mr. A joined Samsung Electronics' Semiconductor Division in 1984 and served as a senior researcher and executive director. During his tenure at Samsung Electronics, he was recognized for developing 12-inch wafer processing technology and received the 'Proud Samsung Award' three times. This award is rarely given even once during employment and is considered a guaranteed ticket to executive promotion.
After moving to Hynix Semiconductor in 2001, he led various organizations including research and development (R&D) and manufacturing production. At that time, he contributed to overcoming Hynix Semiconductor's management difficulties by achieving the lowest cost with maximum yield and production volume. Since then, the industry has called Mr. A a master of yield.
After serving as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Vice President at Hynix Semiconductor, he resigned in 2010. Subsequently, he worked as a professor specializing in semiconductor-related fields at Korea University and Hanyang University, and in 2014 was appointed President of Manufacturing Innovation at Hanwha Group's manufacturing division. He also worked in the solar energy sector, which has similarities to semiconductors, serving as CEO of STX Solar in 2011.
After resigning as CTO of Hanwha Q CELLS in 2015, he was active in Taiwan. There, he founded 'Jinsemi,' a consulting firm based in Singapore, focusing on memory semiconductor consulting. Through Jinsemi, which holds semiconductor manufacturing patents, he was involved in the design and production management of semiconductor factories in China. During this process, he faced criticism for allegedly recruiting domestic semiconductor personnel to overseas locations such as China, but Mr. A denied these allegations.
