Why Do Opposition's Reformists Doubt Incumbent Lawmakers' Claims to Break Established Privileges?
Jo Eungcheon "Democratic Party Situation Worsens After Lee Jae-myung Regime"
Lee Won-wook "Innovation Committee Must Define Goals, Direction, and Role"
An interesting point of observation regarding the internal situation of the Democratic Party of Korea is that the so-called Bimyeong faction (non-Lee Jae-myung faction) has begun to suspect the political intentions behind the claims to break the vested interests of incumbent lawmakers. While breaking the vested interests of members of the National Assembly is perceived as an undisputed issue, the reality is different.
On the 13th, Democratic Party lawmaker Cho Eung-cheon appeared on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show' and raised his voice, saying, "Will changing the delegate system solve all the problems of the Democratic Party?" Cho argued, "Our current problem is that intra-party democracy is weakening, factionalism is intensifying, and ultimately, the party's will and the public's will are diverging."
Cho explained, "The first mention of the Innovation Committee was at the May 14 reform general meeting. It was the day we resolved to fundamentally reflect and embark on genuine reform with the determination of re-founding the party," adding, "So, I thought the Innovation Committee was meant to seriously examine and fix the major problems the Democratic Party has."
However, he claimed that the direction of innovation changed as the pro-Lee Jae-myung faction began to push the agenda of breaking the vested interests of incumbent lawmakers. Cho said, "Those belonging to the mainstream, the pro-Lee faction, at some point started saying that the vested interest group is the incumbents, and that breaking that vested interest is innovation," and pointed out, "Is that why we ended up like this? No, it is not."
Cho stated, "After losing the April 7 by-elections, the presidential election, and the local elections?three major consecutive defeats?the Lee Jae-myung leadership system was established," and added, "A year has passed, but instead of improving, the situation is reportedly worsening."
Regarding the pro-Lee faction lawmakers' intention behind advocating 'breaking the vested interests of incumbent lawmakers,' he said, "Ultimately, it is about strengthening direct democracy within the party," meaning "strengthening party membership rights and, in the end, increasing the influence of hardline party members."
Cho also raised doubts about the function of the Innovation Committee, saying, "The mission, nature, and authority of the Innovation Committee are not currently shared," and questioned its role.
He said, "It is unclear what kind of organization or committee the Innovation Committee is," and added, "If you ask who should be the chairperson, it does not match whether that person is suitable for the Innovation Committee."
Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Won-wook, classified as part of the Bimyeong faction, also emphasized the urgency of defining the Innovation Committee's goals, direction, and role.

On the 13th, he appeared on BBS Radio's 'Jeon Young-shin's Morning Journal' and said, "We lost two major elections last year?the presidential and local elections?and yet we have not even conducted evaluations or reflections," adding, "If this Innovation Committee is formed, evaluations and reflections on the presidential and local elections, as well as on the second year of the Lee Jae-myung leadership system, must be conducted first."
