Honduras, Which Severed Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan, Opens Embassy in Beijing
Number of Taiwan's Diplomatic Allies Reduced to 13
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen: "Must Become Strong to Maintain Peace"
Honduras, which severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China, opened its embassy in Beijing on the 11th.
According to local Chinese media, Honduras held an embassy opening ceremony on the morning of the same day at a diplomatic complex in Chaoyang District, Beijing.
China was represented by State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang, and Honduras by Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina.
Honduras cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, with which it had maintained relations for 82 years, after establishing diplomatic relations with China in March. This was a result of accepting China's "One China" principle, which does not recognize Taiwan as an official country. Consequently, the number of Taiwan's diplomatic allies has decreased to 13.
Honduras President Xiomara Castro has been on a state visit to China since the 9th, becoming the first Honduran president to do so. President Castro arrived in Shanghai on the morning of the 9th, visited the New Development Bank (NDB) established by BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) to request membership, and visited Huawei's Shanghai research institute. She arrived in Beijing the previous afternoon and is scheduled to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen stated the day before that to achieve peace, one must first become strong.

Amid rising military tensions across the Taiwan Strait, President Tsai emphasized during the Hai'an 11 exercise conducted by the Coast Guard at Kaohsiung Port in southern Taiwan the previous day, "To maintain and protect peace in the Taiwan Strait, we must first become strong ourselves," adding, "The more united we are, the safer we become, and the safer Taiwan is, the safer the world becomes."
