Suicide Prevention with Guro-gu 'Saengmyeongjikimi Activists'
Training Life Keeper Activists and Focusing Suicide Prevention Promotion Targeting Lodging Businesses... Promoting Resident-Centered Prevention Projects
Amid recent news related to suicide, Guro-gu (District Mayor Moon Heon-il) is actively carrying out suicide prevention activities.
This year, the district recruited about 10 life keeper activists from those who completed the Life Keeper training. They will begin full-scale activities after completing a 4-hour ‘Life Keeper Activist Training’ on June 28.
The main duties of life keeper activists include ▲ monitoring Hope Sales Outlets ▲ participating in campaigns to foster a culture of respect for life ▲ managing and connecting semi-case management subjects △ and other suicide prevention promotional activities.
In particular, by promoting resident-centered prevention projects within the local community, the district plans to build a tightly knit suicide prevention safety net for residents.
Life keeper activists can register in the volunteer system to receive recognition for their volunteer hours, and separately receive a certain level of volunteer activity expenses such as transportation and meal allowances.
Previously, the district has also actively engaged in suicide prevention promotional activities targeting lodging businesses, where the proportion of suicide deaths is high.
Carbon monoxide detectors, ranging from 2 to 3 units depending on the size, were distributed and installed in 10 lodging businesses.
Additionally, posters and leaflets with information about support organizations were posted in visible places such as the entrances of lodging businesses, and magnetic stickers with the mental health welfare center and 24-hour counseling phone numbers were attached inside guest rooms to enable requests for help.
A Guro-gu official stated, “If there are residents considering suicide, we will strengthen promotional activities so that they can receive help anytime and anywhere,” and added, “We hope more residents will take interest in and participate in suicide prevention activities.”
