Mrs. Kwon Yang-sook Gifts Ceramic Plate Featuring Dokdo and Books Related to Dokdo
"Seemingly Gifted to Emphasize Dokdo as Korean Territory"
Posthumous Work of Former President Roh, 'The Future of Progress,' Also Delivered
On the 23rd, marking the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President Roh Moo-hyun, Kwon Yang-sook presented Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, with a mugunghwa flower plate ceramic featuring a map of the Korean Peninsula, along with two books: one on the Japanese military's invasion of Dokdo and another on the future of progressivism.
According to Han Min-soo, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, Kwon gave Lee three gifts during a luncheon held prior to the memorial ceremony that day.
After the luncheon, Han told reporters, "Kwon presented Lee with a mugunghwa flower plate ceramic," adding, "The mugunghwa plate depicts our national flower, the mugunghwa, along with a map of the Korean Peninsula and our territory, Dokdo, sculpted onto it. This ceramic plate was originally gifted by former President Roh on April 25, 2006, when he issued a special national address on the Dokdo issue, beginning with 'Dokdo is our land. Not just our land, but a land with a 40-year history of deep sorrow clearly engraved in history.' Following that, former President Roh gave this special mugunghwa plate ceramic as a meaningful gift to foreign heads of state at the time." Han added, "This gift was understood as emphasizing that Dokdo is an inherent territory of the Republic of Korea."
Kwon also gifted a book on the Japanese military's invasion of Dokdo. Han explained, "The book on the Japanese military's invasion of Dokdo was one of the references used during former President Roh's special address in April 2006. At that time, the president distributed this book to his aides and encouraged them to read it." He continued, "Although 20 years have passed since then, it was understood that the gift still holds significance."
Former President Roh's unfinished posthumous work, The Future of Progressivism, was also given to Lee as a gift. Han said, "This is a book and collection of writings directly authored by former President Roh after his retirement. It can be seen as a popular textbook for citizens, but it remains incomplete. The book discusses what the state should do for the happy lives of its people, and how progressivism should respond to the state's active role directly connected to citizens' lives." He added, "Kwon regards this gift as a request for Lee to take on the role of seeking answers to the many questions left by former President Roh."
