Yeosu City Opens Jeonnam's First Joint Laundry for Industrial Complex Workers' Workwear
One-Stop Service for Collection, Laundry, and Delivery
Expectations for Improved Workers' Rights and Labor Welfare
Jeonnam's first industrial complex workers' uniform communal laundry, 'Yeosu Industrial Complex Happiness Laundry,' held its opening ceremony on the 22nd and officially began operations.
According to the city on the 23rd, about 100 people, including Yeosu Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong, members of the National Assembly, provincial and city council members, labor organization representatives, and workers, attended the opening ceremony held within the Yeosu Future Innovation District.
'Yeosu Industrial Complex Happiness Laundry' was established on the site of the Future Innovation District Workers' Complex Cultural Center with a total project cost of 1 billion KRW. It occupies about 100 pyeong on the first floor and is equipped with 3 washing machines, 4 dryers, and 2 presses, capable of handling approximately 900 pieces of laundry per day.
The laundry fee is 500 KRW for one set of summer work clothes (top and bottom) and 1,000 KRW for winter work clothes, which is cheaper than market laundry costs, allowing small and medium-sized enterprise workers to use it without burden.
The laundry operation is entrusted to the Jeonnam Yeosu Regional Self-Support Center, with 8 employees working and operating one delivery vehicle to provide a one-stop service from laundry collection to washing, drying, and delivery.
Yeosu Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong said, "I sincerely hope that 'Yeosu Industrial Complex Happiness Laundry' will live up to its name by returning the value of labor embedded in the workers' uniforms to the happiness of improving labor welfare," adding, "We will continue to carefully take care of workers' welfare, health, and safety to create a 'good industrial complex to work in' and a 'good Yeosu to live in.'"
Meanwhile, due to the difficulties in washing industrial complex workers' uniforms contaminated with chemical pollutants, the need for communal laundry facilities has been steadily raised. In 2021, the laundry construction was promoted together with the Yeosu National Industrial Complex Workers' Complex Cultural Center and was selected in a joint government competition.
